Read Me file For CD-ROM installations
This document contains information that may be helpful to you while installing and using AT&T WorldNet Service Software. This document contains four sections: Installation and Configuration Notes, Upgrading your AT&T WorldNet Service Software, Moving Your AT&T WorldNet Service account to a New Computer. You can find a separate document, Known Problems, on the installation CD-ROM. This document and the Know Problems document are both on the AT&T WorldNet CD-ROM and in the Microsoft Internet Applications folder (after the installation process is complete).
If you are currently an AT&T WorldNet Service member, refer to Upgrading your AT&T WorldNet service Software.
Installation and Configuration Notes
The following sections contain information on installing and configuring AT&T WorldNet Service Software on your Macintosh.
Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer Software
Once your modem is ready, restart your Macintosh RUNNING THE EXTENSIONS REQUIRED FOR OPEN TRANSPORT AND/OR OT/PPP IF PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED. All other extensions must be disabled including those for virus protection. To disable all the extensions except those required:
1. Launch Extensions Manager in the Control Panels folder.
2. Turn off non-essential control panels and extensions; see the following information for details concerning the operating system version you are using. Please note that the version of your system software makes a difference as to what extensions and control panels need to be activated or disabled.
a. If you are installing from a CD-ROM and using System 7.5 to 7.5.5 and the Extensions Manager, disable the following:
Ñ Turn off all control panels except for PPP (if installed) and TCP/IP (or MacTCP ) control panels.
Ñ Turn off all of the extensions except for Apple CD-ROM (or your non-Apple CD-ROM driver) and Foreign File Access.
b. If you are using system 7.1 without any extension management software, go to the Control Panels and Extensions folders (which are within the System folder) and drag the above items to any location you wish outside of theSystem folder and restart your Macintosh. After installing Microsoft Internet Explorer software, drag the items back into the System folder and restart your Macintosh.
c. If you are installing from a CD-ROM and using Masc OS 7.6 or latter and the Extensions Manager, disable the following:
Ñ Turn off all control panels except for TCP/IP, AppleTalk, Modem (if installed) and PPP (if installed).
Ñ Turn off all of the extensions except for Apple CD-ROM (or your non-Apple CD-ROM driver), Foreign File Access, all Open Transport extensions, all Open Transport/PPP extensions (if installed), all Shared Library Manager extensions.
Note: In some versions of the Extensions Manager , the Shared Library Manager extension will not be visible, but will automatically load with the Open Transport extensions.
3. Close the Extensions Manager .
4. Restart your Macintosh.
5. After the Macintosh has restarted, double-click the Install AT&T WorldNet icon. (For further information on the use of the Extensions Manager , consult your Macintosh User╒s Guide.) Follow the instructions from the installer to complete the installation.
WARNING! If your Macintosh computer is using MacTCP or a version of Open Transport prior to 1.1.1, during installation you may receive an error message indicating ╥Your current TCP/IP software is unknown or not installed.╙ If you receive this error message, do one of the following:
Ñ For 68k and PPC MacTCP users
Click the Skip button at the bottom of the screen. This brings up a window with a message stating that the computer must be restarted after installation. At the bottom of this window are the Cancel and Continue buttons. Choose Continue. The installation software will proceed and properly install the software.
Ñ For 68k and PPC Open Transport (prior to 1.1.1) users
Click Install. This automatically starts the installation software for Open Transport 1.1.1. Follow the prompts to complete the installation of Open Transport. After you are prompted and perform the restart of your Macintosh, double-click the AT&T WorldNet Service installer to complete the remainder of the Microsoft Internet Explorer installation.
Ñ Any Macintosh running Open Transport 1.1.1
If you get a window stating that Open Transport PPP (OT/PPP) is not installed, proceed to install it as prompted by the installation software. This can occur on any Macintosh using Open Transport 1.1.1 (or later) that does not have OT/PPP installed. Click the Install button to install the OT/PPP. At its conclusion the Mac will be restarted. After restart, simply double-click the AT&T WorldNet installer icon to complete the installation process.
Working with networking software
AT&T WorldNet Service software requires that your computer has networking software (such as MacTCP or Open Transport ) installed. If the AT&T WorldNet Service software installer detects this software is missing from your Macintosh computer, it will take steps to address this situation as follows:
The CD-ROM installer will prompt you to install Open Transport and/or OT/PPP as needed. The installer will notify you if you need this software and ask if you want to install this software.
Ñ If the AT&T WorldNet Service software installer asks you to install Open Transport ...
1. Click the Install button in the dialog box.
2. Follow the directions to install the Open Transport software.
3. At the end of this process, click the Restart button in the final screen to reboot the computer.
4. After rebooting the computer, double-click the Install AT&T WorldNet Service icon to launch the installer.
5. If you receive a dialog stating you need to install OT/PPP software, click the Install button in the dialog box.
(If you do NOT receive this dialog, continue to follow the AT&T WorldNet Service installation instructions
on the screen. Disregard steps 5-8.)
6. Follow the instructions to install the OT/PPP software.
7. At the end of this process, click the Restart button in the final screen to reboot the computer.
8. After rebooting the computer, double-click the Install AT&T WorldNet Service icon to launch the installer
and complete the installation process.
9. After completing the installation, you will receive a dialog prompting you to reboot the Macintosh.
10. After rebooting the Macintosh, you will see an open window on your desktop. Double-click the
Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 icon in this window to continue with the registration process.
Ñ If the AT&T WorldNet Service software installer first asks you to install OT/PPP...
1. Click the Install button in the dialog box.
2. Follow the directions to install the OT/PPP software.
3. At the end of this process, click the Restart button in the final screen to reboot the computer.
4. After rebooting the computer, double-click the Install AT&T WorldNet Service icon to launch the installer
and complete the installation process.
5. After completing the installation, you will receive a dialog prompting you to reboot the Macintosh.
6. After rebooting the Macintosh, you will see an open window on your desktop. Double-click the Internet
Connection Wizard 2.5 icon in this window to continue with the registration process.
For CD-ROM installation with Mac OS versions 7.5, 7.5.1 or 7.5.2
With these Mac OS systems, the CD-ROM-based installer will NOT prompt you to install any networking software. In this case, you must manually install the software. However, Apple Computer, Inc. does NOT recommend usingOT/PPP with these versions of the operating system. You must install MacTCP from your original Mac OS installation diskettes or CD-ROM.
IMPORTANT NOTE: For both 68k and PPC-based systems, the AT&T WorldNet Service software installer will NOT prompt you to install networking software if any portion of the appropriate networking software is already present in your active System Folder. If you find the installer is not taking the appropriate steps to install networking software, you may have some, but not all, of the software installed. In this case, you should manually install the appropriate networking software, reboot the computer and then continue with the registration process.
OT/PPP 1.0 compatibilitiy with the Apple Internet Connection Kit
Please refer to the ╥OT/PPP Release Notes╙ file located in the following folder on your hard drive:
Open Transport/PPP.
Special instructions for customers with MacTCP installed
If you are using MacTCP, one of the following three sections may apply to you.
If you are a current AT&T WorldNet Service member using FreePPP
1. Install the Microsoft Internet Explorer software as per the instructions in Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer Software.
2. After restarting the Macintosh at the end of installation, you will notice the Internet Connection Wizard window will be open. Close this window.
3. Using your Extensions Manager (or equivalent software), disable the Config PPP 2.5 (MacPPP) Control Panel and the PPP extension. (If using system 7.1 without any extension management software, go to the Control Panels and Extensions folders (which are within the System folder) and drag these items to any location you wish outside of the System folder.)
4. Restart the Macintosh.
5. Now you are ready to configure the Microsoft Internet Explorer software. Refer to the section Upgrading your AT&T WorldNet Service Software for instructions on how to properly configure the software.
If you are currently using an Internet Service Provider other than AT&T WorldNet Service and using ConfigPPP 2.5 (MacPPP 2.5 )
1. Install the Microsoft Internet Explorer software as per the instructions in the Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer Software.
2. After restarting the Macintosh at the end of installation, the Internet Connection Wizard window will be open. Double-click the Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 icon.
3. Follow the prompts to use the Internet Connection Wizard to configure the Microsoft Internet Explorer software.
If you are currently using an Internet Service Provider other than AT&T WorldNet Service and are using a dialer other than ConfigPPP 2.5 (such as FreePPP)
1. Install the Microsoft Internet Explorer software as per the instructions in the Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer Software.
2. After restarting the Macintosh at the end of installation, you will notice the Internet Connection Wizard window will be open. Close this window.
3. Using your Extensions Manager (or equivalent software), disable the components of your current PPP dialer. (If using system 7.1 without any extension management software, you will have to go to the Control Panels and Extensions folders (which are within the System folder) and drag these items to any location you wish outside of the System folder.)
4. Restart your Macintosh.
5. After restarting your Macintosh, double-click the Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 icon and follow the prompts to configure your new Microsoft Internet Explorer software.
Selecting a modem
If your modem is not available in the list of modems, try the following:
1. If you are using Config PPP 2.5 (MacPPP 2.5), select the Hayes Compatible Modem from the Modem pop-up menu. If this does not work, or you are using PPP (OT/PPP 1.0), go to step 2.
2. Select a modem from the same manufacturer as your modem from the list. If this does not work, go to step 3.
3. Select a modem from the list that has the same speed and features (such as voice, V.34, etc.) as the modem that you have. (If you are uncertain of your modems╒ features refer to the documentation that came with your modem.)
During registration, do not try to access other Internet sites
During registration with AT&T WorldNet Service, do NOT choose any options from the Favorites or the Go menus. Doing so will cause your registration to be unsuccessful. For example, if you choose Settings.isp from the Go menu, Microsoft Internet Explorer will close and an Internet Connection Wizard screen will display, as if the registration has been successfully completed. In this case, the registration was NOT successful. You will need to quit Internet Connection Wizard and launch Internet Connection Wizard again.
Upgrading your AT&T WorldNet Service Software
The following sections contain information on upgrading from a previous version of AT&T WorldNet Service software.
Upgrade procedures for current users of Microsoft Internet Explorer software
1. Install the software as per Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer Software, above.
2. Launch Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 and proceed to the ╥Setup Options╙ screen (the second screen).
3. Select the Current Settings radio button.
4. Click the Next button.
5. This will advance you to the final screen:
Ñ If you are using Open Transport, click the Explore Now! button to access the Internet or click the Finished button if you do not want to access the Internet at this time.
Ñ If you are using MacTCP, click the Restart button. If you want to access the Internet, double-click the Internet Explorer 3.01 icon (in the Microsoft Internet Applications folder) after the computer reboots.
6. For users upgrading from Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1 only: after the upgrade, you must configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 for the AT&T WorldNet Service news server.
a. Launch Internet Mail and News 3.0 by double clicking its icon in the Microsoft Internet Applications folder.
b. Pull down the Edit menu and select Preferences╔.
c. Click on ╥News╙ from the list of preferences options on the left side of the window.
d. In the NNTP host field, enter:
netnews.worldnet.att.net
e. Click the OK button to accept the information and close the window. This correctly configures your news settings.
Upgrade procedures for current users of Netscape Navigator software who are installing Microsoft Internet Explorer software
If you are currently an AT&T WorldNet Service member, using Netscape Navigator and upgrading to Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may need to manually configure some settings. Following are two methods for configuring these settings; choose the upgrade path most suitable for your needs.
Choose Procedure A if:
1. you wish to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer and wish to continue using FreePPP as a dialer and/or
2. you wish to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer and have configured TCP/IP to use multiple ISPs and do not wish to lose this functionality.
Choose Procedure B if:
1. you wish to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer and do not wish to continue using FreePPP for a dialer or
2. you wish to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer and wish to keep FreePPP as a dialer while adding a second dialer
Procedure A
The procedure consists of three parts: Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer, Changing the Default Browser in FreePPP and Configuring Internet Mail and News.
Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer
1. To begin installing Microsoft Internet Explorer, double-click the Install AT&T WorldNet Service icon. After installation is complete, you will have to restart your Macintosh.
2. After the Macintosh has restarted, the Internet Connection Wizard window will be open. Do not double-click the Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 icon! Close this window.
3. To use Microsoft Internet Explorer, double-click the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 icon in the Microsoft Internet Applications folder. This launches FreePPP and connects you to AT&T WorldNet Service.
Note: The installation for Netscape Navigator configures FreePPP to start and use Netscape Navigator as the default browser. This will cause Netscape Navigator to open each time you start Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can either quit Netscape Navigator each time, or you can set Microsoft Internet Explorer as the default browser in the FreePPP preferences. To do this, see the section Changing the Default Browser in FreePPP.
Changing the Default Browser in FreePPP
1. Pull down the Apple menu, choose the Control Panels folder and select FreePPP Setup from the hierarchical menu which appears. If necessary, click the triangle in the lower left corner to view more configuration information.
Note: In some cases, the FreePPP Setup icon is not listed in the Control Panels folder. In that case, choose FreePPP Setup from inside the AT&T WorldNet Service folder that existed on your Macintosh prior to installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. Under the General tab, click ╥On Connect, open Netscape Navigator.╙ A Select File dialog box displays. Find and select Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01, then click the Open button. This sets Microsoft Internet Explorer as the default browser.
Note: If Netscape Navigator is not set as the default browser, the option will read ╥Open application on connect.╙
3. Close FreePPP Setup.
Configuring Internet Mail and News 3.0 for use with your AT&T WorldNet Service account
1. Launch Internet Mail and News 3.0 from the Microsoft Internet Applications folder.
2. From the Edit menu, select Preferences and choose E-Mail from the Mail & News list item to set the Email Address, POP host and Password.
3. Under the Personal Settings, fill in the E-mail address field with your e-mail address. Your email address is your e-mail name plus ╥@worldnet.att.net╙ after the name. For example, if your user name is ╥Smith,╙ your email address would be:
Smith@worldnet.att.net
4. In the POP host field, under Retrieving Mail, the following text is displayed:
worldnet.att.net
You need to add the word ╥postoffice╙ right after the @ sign so that the field reads:
postoffice.worldnet.att.net
5. In the Password field, re-enter your e-mail password, even if one already exists in this box. For security reasons, the actual text is not displayed on the screen. Bullets will appear for each character entered.
6. Choose News from the Mail & News list item to set the NNTP host field. In this field, the follwoing text is desplayed:
msnews.microsoft.com
You need to replace this text with the following:
netnews.worldnet.att.net
7. Close the Preferences dialog box by clicking the OK button at the bottom of the screen. You are now ready to send and receive e-mail using Internet Mail & News 3.0 through your AT&T WorldNet Service account.
Note: If you have trouble sending or receiving e-mail the first time, refer to the section Error Sending and/or Receiving E-mail for the First Time in Known Problems.
Procedure B
This procedure consists of 3 parts: extracting account information from your Netscape Navigator -based AT&T WorldNet Service account, installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 and running Internet Connection Wizard.
Extract account information from your Netscape Navigator -based AT&T WorldNet Service account
AT&T WorldNet Service provides a free AccountTool program to assist you with this task. If you have an AT&T WorldNet CD-ROM, you will find this program and its ReadMe -AccountTool file in the Tools:Account Tools folder on the CD-ROM (You may have to scroll down in the main window to see this folder). The ReadMe -AccountTool file explains how to use this program to extract the necessary information. Read the AccountTool instructions carefully; you must create a Macintosh format output file named acctinfo.txt.
Run Internet Connection Wizard
This next section assumes you have installed AT&T WorldNet Service software.
1. Double-click on the Internet Connection Wizard 2.5 icon.
2. In the ╥Get Connected╙ screen, click the Next button to continue to the ╥Setup Options╙ screen.
3. Here, select the Manual radio button and click the Next button to continue to the ╥Set Up Your Internet Connection╙ screen.
4. If you wish to continue, select the Yes radio button and then click the Next button to continue to the ╥How to Connect╙ screen.
5. Select the appropriate option and click the Next button to continue to the ╥Modem Connection╙ screen.
6. Choose your modem and port from the pop-up menus. (If you previously configured your Macintosh System software, your modem will already be selected in this window.) When finished with this screen, click the Next button to continue to the ╥Your Location╙ screen.
7. Select and enter the appropriate information and click the Next button to continue to the ╥Dialing Properties╙ screen.
8. Select and enter the appropriate information click the Next button to continue to the ╥Service Provider Information╙ screen.
9. Click the Next button to continue to the ╥Service Provider Phone Number╙ screen.
10. This is where you will need the information you extracted earlier with AccountTool.. Select and enter the appropriate information (from located next to the letter ╥e╙ in the acctinfo.txt file) and click the Next button to continue to the ╥Logon Name and Password╙ screen.
11. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
Ñ User name box:
Delete everything to the left of the ╥@╙ and enter in the nine digit number located next to the letter ╥f╙ in the acctinfo.txt file. (123456789@worldnet.att.net. file)
Ñ Password box:
Delete everything and type in the password exactly as it appears in the latter portion of item ╥f╙ in the acctinfo.txt file (the usual layout is a mixture of 16 characters, letters and symbols).
12. After entering this information, click the Next button to continue to the ╥IP Address╙ screen.
13. Make sure the My Internet Service Provider assigns me one radio button is selected and then click the Next button to continue to the ╥DNS Server Address & Search Domain╙ screen.
14. This already is populated. Change the Alternate DNS Server information to read:
204.127.160.1
Make sure the ╥Search Domain╙ field contains:
worldnet.att.net
Click the Next button to continue to the ╥Set Up PPP Script╙ screen.
15. Select the No radio button and click the Next button to advance to the ╥Set Up Your Internet Mail Account╙ screen.
16. Select the Yes radio button and click the Next button to advance to the ╥Internet Mail Account Name╙ screen.
17. You may leave the default ╥My Mail╙ setting or you may enter a name (such as ╥WorldNet╙) for your Email account. Click the Next button to advance to the ╥Internet Mail Display Name╙ screen.
18. The information for this screen should be populated correctly. Make sure your name reads as you would like it to appear on your email messages and and click the Next button to advance to the ╥Internet Mail E-Mail Address╙ screen.
19. Enter your E-mail address as it appears by letter ╥g╙ in the acctinfo.txt file. Click the Next button to continue to the ╥E-mail Server Addresses╙ screen.
20. The information for this screen should be populated correctly. Click the Next button to continue to the ╥Internet Mail Logon╙ screen.
21. The information for this screen should be populated correctly. However, you should re-enter your password exactly as it appears by letter ╥g╙ in the acctinfo.txt file.Click the Next button to continue to the ╥Set Up Your Internet News Account╙ screen.
22. Make sure the Yes radio button is selected and click the Next button to continue to the ╥Internet News Account Name╙ screen.
23. You may leave the default ╥My News╙ setting or you may enter a name (such as ╥WorldNet News╙) for your News account. Click the Next button to advance to the ╥Internet News Server╙ screen.
24. Make sure the News (NNTP) Server field reads ╥netnews.worldnet.att.net╙ (this should be populated already). Click the Next button to continue to the ╥Finished Setup!╙ screen.
25. At this point, you have configured the software.
Ñ If you are using Open Transport, click the Explore Now! button to access the Internet or click the Finished button if you do not want to access the Internet at this time.
Ñ If you are using MacTCP, click the Restart button. If you want to access the Internet, double-click theInternet Explorer 3.01 icon (in the Microsoft Internet Applications folder) after the computer reboots.
Install and run Mail and Address Book Importer
For your conveniece, AT&T provides a tool which will allow you to import your email from your previous Netscape Navigator software into Internet Mail and News. The Mail Importer Installer and Importer 1.0 Read Me files are located on your AT&T WorldNet CD-ROM in the Mail Importer Installer folder which is inside theTools folder.
Moving your AT&T WorldNet Service account to another Macintosh
Note: An AT&T WorldNet Service account may be used on more than one computer only under specific conditions. Check the Terms and Conditions on the AT&T WorldNet Service page and view the detailed terms concerning the service plan you selected and the conditions for use on multiple computers (including one concurrent logon only for unlimited usage accounts).
The following sections contain information on moving your AT&T WorldNet Service account to another Macintosh.
Section 1 pertains to moving your account from one Macintosh running Microsoft Internet Explorer to a different Macintosh running Microsoft Internet Explorer .
Section 2 pertains to moving your account from one Macintosh running Netscape Navigator 2.02E to a different Macintosh running Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Section 1: Moving your account between Macintoshes running Microsoft Internet Explorer
To perform this procedure:
Ñ You must have configured the original AT&T WorldNet Service account in Microsoft Internet Explorer and...
Ñ You now wish to move the account to another Macintosh and configure the account for Microsoft Internet Explorer.
1. On the Macintosh you are currently using to access AT&T WorldNet Service, copy to floppy disk the Settings.isp file from the following folder:
Microsoft Internet Applications
Internet Connection Wizard
Internet Setup
Settings.isp
2. On the Macintosh to which you want to move your account, install AT&T WorldNet Service. (This procedure can be found in Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 , above.)
3. After installing AT&T WorldNet Service, insert the floppy disk containing the Settings.isp file. (It is not necessary to copy this file to the Macintosh hard drive.) Double click the Settings.isp file. This starts Internet Connection Wizard 2.5. Click the Next button at the bottom of the ╥Get Connected╙ screen.
4. In the Setup Options screen, choose the Automatic option, then click the Next button.
5. In the Begin Auto Setup screen, click the Next button.
6. In the Choose Modem screen, select your modem (or equivalent) and port from the pop-up menus. After selection is complete, click the Next button.
7. In the Your Location screen, type in your area code and the first three digits of your phone number in the appropriate boxes. When complete, click the Next button.
8. Read the Dialing Properties screen very carefully as the phone setup may vary. After entering the appropriate settings, click the Next button.
9. In the last screen, your choices depend on the type of networking software you are using.
If you are using Open Transport, you can do either of the following:
Ñ If you wish to use the AT&T WorldNet Service at a later time, click the Finished button in the Finished screen. This will quit the Internet Connection Wizard and the Macintosh Desktop will be displayed.
Ñ If you wish to use the AT&T WorldNet Service at this time click the Explore Now button. The Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 application will automatically launch; PPP will dial and connect you to AT&T WorldNet Service.
If you are using MacTCP, a window will appear telling you that the Macintosh must be restarted. Click the Restart button to restart the Macintosh. After the Macintosh has restarted, open the Microsoft Internet Applications folder and double-click on the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 icon to launch the application and connect to AT&T WorldNet Service.
Section 2: Moving your account from a Netscape Navigator 2.02 configuration to an Microsoft Internet Explorer configuration
1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer on the new computer as per the instructions in Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 .
2. Follow Procedure 2 under Upgrading your AT&T WorldNet Software section in this document. Perform the Netscape Navigator related tasks on the Macintosh using Netscape Navigator. Perform the Microsoft Internet Explorer tasks on the Macintosh running Microsoft Internet Explorer.
